Lord Cullen is a hero of the oil industry after his chairmanship of the inquiry in the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 and his safety recommendations which followed. He came number one in the ballot that Total held to decide who should be painted.  He wanted Piper Alpha to feature in the background, which was quite a task.
