Professor Ian Deary, was the Director of the Lothian Birth Cohorts, world-leading research in Edinburgh into the ageing process. The more I got to know Ian, his team and members of the cohort the more I realised he was a “modern-day-Shackleton” figure. His team would happily go the extra distance to support him.
